Meet Cyrano - September 2021

Cyrano is such an amazing guy! He is very silly and playful, he’s chalk full of character to say the least! He loves his walks, thrashing around his toys, shredding paper bags is one of his favourites too! He’s very affectionate and will melt into your lap every night.

Where he came from:

Cyrano found himself without a home after his elderly guardian passed away. That’s how he ended up at the shelter for almost a month and then got transferred to our care. The poor guy was in rough shape too; his hair was overgrown and matted, he was extremely overweight, was peeing blood and needed surgery to remove bladder stones. At the ripe age of 16 his prognosis wasn’t promising but you wouldn’t believe it today!

What he got in foster care:

In foster care over the past couple of years, Cyrano has made incredible progress! He had his bladder stones surgically removed. He’s been losing weight and gaining energy. He loves longer walks than you’d believe! He has come out of his shell to reveal a hilarious character, full of joy and zest! In the early days he was pretty quiet, and really sensitive to handling. He would even growl and snap if you reached for him, or touched him in any way that he didn’t like, but he was going through a lot of stressful changes in his life. He also barked at a lot of things like sounds in the hallway, or when he was left alone even for a minute. Poor guy was probably really stressed despite our best efforts. Fortunately, all of those issues have got significantly better and better with time and gentle, thoughtful care.

How he is doing now:

In the past couple of years Cyrano has lived with a large dog, for a week there were two large dogs, and at another time he lived with a cat too. This was not something that he was so sure about in the beginning, but with time and patience he was able to happily coexist with them, and go on walks with them.

Cyrano continues to be more and more comfortable, sillier, and independent. He doesn’t even bark nearly as much when his people have to leave the house – often times not at all! He has also lost a LOT of weight which has made him a lot more active and agile.

Update - 2023

Even though Cyrano is a totally different man these days, both physically and emotionally, it took him a couple of years to get here. At the ripe old age of almost 19, it is in his best interest to continue to remain in our care and avoid any further moving around. He continues to “age backwards” and we are hoping that he will share his longevity secrets with us one day :)

BUTTONNOSES Rescue relies on the generosity of donors to cover the cost of care required to keep dogs in our Forever Foster program comfortable during their remaining days. If you would like to sponsor little Cyrano and make a donation in support of his care please consider making a donation to our rescue. **
